It was founded by two locomotive manufacturers and a foundry as General Steel Castings Corporation in Eddystone, Pennsylvania. The following year, it acquired the Commonwealth Steel Company, a critical supplier to the rail industry, and the year after that, completed its own modern steel foundry.
